Kaua'i County hopes to receive $812,305 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding for seven projects over the coming year.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste has proclaimed April 9-15 Community Development Week on Kaua'i.

The projects include restoration of the 92-year-old Japanese Stone Lantern in Kapa'a, two counseling and education programs for new home buyers and a vehicle for Kaua'i Economic Opportunity, to be used to transport residents of a county homeless shelter to help them get jobs and gain self-sufficiency.

A series of posters on the various projects will be available to the public at 10 a.m. April 10 and 2 p.m. April 12 at conference room A in the county's Pi'ikoi Building. For more information, call 241-4428.

HONOKA'A MAN KILLED IN CRASH

A 36-year-old Honoka'a, Hawai'i, man died Sunday from injuries he suffered in a crash on Ali'i Drive in Kailua, Kona.

Police said Wesley I. Hirata was driving a white 2007 Toyota pickup truck north when it ran off the road and struck a rock wall near Ho'omaluhia Place shortly before 8:58 a.m.

Hirata was taken to Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m.

Police said speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

Hirata's death was the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with seven at this time last year.

PAIR ARRESTED IN ROBBERY AT BEACH

Kaua'i police have arrested two men in connection with a robbery Tuesday of a camper at 'Anini Beach Park.

The camper reported two men claimed to be police officers as they robbed him at machete point. He reported they took his identification and other personal items.

Police arrested a 25-year-old Kilauea man and a 24-year-old Kapa'a man for investigation of second-degree robbery and impersonating a police officer.
