'Ehukai bodysurfing contest slated to get under way

Advertiser Staff

The 2007 Ke Kaha Nalu Hanana O 'Ehukai, translated as bodysurfing experience at 'Ehukai, begins its holding period Sunday, which means the event testing the mettle of some of Hawai'i's best body surfers could begin any time from Sunday to April 13.

Event coordinator the North Shore Lifeguard Associations will be looking for peak conditions: medium-size west swells with easterly tradewinds at Banzai Pipeline, said Rick Williams, with the association.

Quiksilver is sponsoring the event and providing the prize money, including a $700 purse for the winning two-man rescue race for lifeguards who must go in and out of the surf to complete their task.

The meet will be limited to 48 competitors, men and women over 18 years, and about 10 slots were still available this morning. To enter, show up early on the day of the event, which will begin about 8:15 in the morning at 'Ehukai Beach Park across from Sunset Beach Elementary.

To learn if the event will take place, tune in to any radio station that airs Surf News Network reports.
