DNA evidence links man to 1999 murder, police say

Advertiser Staff

A convicted killer was arrested yesterday after DNA evidence linked him to a second murder, police said.

Police said Honolulu police lab workers linked a DNA sample to Darnell Griffin, 48, that was taken from 20-year-old Evelyn Luka. It was not clear how the sample was linked to Griffin.

Luka was found in a grassy area near the Ka Uka Boulevard off ramp on Sept. 6, 1999.

Griffin was arrested 3:25 p.m. at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center, where he is being held for a parole violation. Griffin served prison time following a murder conviction in the death of a 26-year-old woman in 1980.

Both victims were strangled to death.
