TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"March of the Penguins" (2005), 6 p.m., Hallmark Channel. So you think you have an absent spouse? Put yourself in a male penguin's place: Your mate has to leave to get some food. Now you must shield your offspring by standing motionless for weeks, withstanding the fierce Antarctic winds. It's all part of the odd life of the emperor penguins, who somehow retain their dignity throughout. They were beautifully filmed by Luc Jacquet; for this splendid U.S. version, Morgan Freeman adds spare and eloquent narration.

"Raines," 8 p.m., NBC. Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne") has been dead a lot lately. There was her "Desperate Housewives" stint, and now this episode. Fortunately, "Raines" gives its dead people a lot to do. They live in the mind of Detective Raines (Jeff Goldblum), as he tries to reconstruct their lives and the cases. Tonight, Metcalf's murder leads to a trail of deception and murder.

OF NOTE

"Ghost Whisperer," 7 p.m., CBS. A ghost dog is causing trouble. Naturally, Melinda consults with Cesar Millan, known as the "Dog Whisperer." Maybe next time she'll get trampled by Mr. Ed's spirit and Robert Redford will visit.

"Wedding Bells," 8 p.m., Fox. A bride draws criticism for her plan to wear a revealing gown. Meanwhile, Russell hasn't been showing much interest in sex; Jane, his wife, considers role-playing.

"Close to Home," 8 p.m., CBS. Annabeth tries to get around the statute of limitations after a man confesses to a rape he committed 11 years ago.

"Six Degrees," 8 p.m., ABC. Last week, Whitney finally broke up with her cheating boyfriend, then learned that he is her firm's new client. She took an interest in Steven, as did her widowed friend Laura. Tonight, Laura finds an Internet romance.

"Numb3rs," 9 p.m., CBS. When a corporate plane crashes, Charlie studies its computer for an explanation.

"Law & Order," 9 p.m., NBC. At first, police are probing an arson case involving church fires. Then they find this may be murder.
