San Jose St. beats UH in opener of softball twin bill

Liz Perez scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift San Jose State to a 2-1 extra-inning victory over Hawai'i in the first game of a softball doubleheader at San Jose, Calif.

The Spartans snapped the Rainbow Wahine's nine-game winning streak and handed UH its first conference loss. San Jose State is 14-17 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. Hawai'i is 33-8 and 6-1.

UH sophomore pitcher Justine Smethurst (13-6) threw a complete game with a career-high 12 strikeouts.

UH scored first in the top of the third. With two outs, Richie-Anne Titcomb reached safely on a bloop single to center field. Clare Warwick followed with a double to left-center field, scoring Titcomb.

San Jose State tied it when Kasey Igarta hit a double to the corner in left field and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, Smethurst struck out the first two batters, but Liz Perez then hit a little chopper between the pitcher and the catcher for an infield single. Igartahit a bloop single into right and Perez sprinted for third Rightfielder Titcomb's throw to third was wild and Perez scored.
