Goodwill Kapolei Center given $1 million federal grant

U.S. Senators Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye announced Friday that Goodwill's new Ohana Career and Learning Center in Kapolei has been awarded a $1 million Public Works and Economic Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

Inouye and Akaka supported the grant in a letter sent to the agency's Seattle regional office in January. The senators said the project has the ability to "enable the economic self-sufficiency of the residents and communities in Leeward O'ahu."

The center will house classrooms for job training and development, as well as a Goodwill retail store and donation center. The facility would assist an initial 1,600 clients with literacy training, as well as counseling in resume writing and job interviews.

The center will enable Leeward residents to get job training without making a three-hour round trip to attend training programs in urban Honolulu.
