HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Get Keiki IDs at family festival

Advertiser Staff

Children can get free identification cards from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the 2007 Honolulu Family Festival at Magic Island.

Volunteers from Chevron Hawaii will be assisting with Keiki ID, a program by the Honolulu Police Department to provide parents with a record of their child's vital information.

The identification card includes a recent photo of the child, address, phone number, physician information and the child's left and right thumbprints.

Created in 1996, Keiki ID is a free community service. So far, it has given out more than 200,000 cards statewide.

The 2007 Honolulu Family Festival will be open today through Sunday. Money raised from this year's event will go toward improvements at Ala Moana Park.

KAHULUI AIRPORT WORK UNDER WAY

Weekend maintenance of the main runway at Kahului Airport will cause increased aircraft traffic over residential areas in Central Maui as planes are rerouted onto a different runway, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Runway 2/20 was closed from 12:30 to 5:30 a.m. yesterday, with overnight air cargo flights rerouted to Runway 5/23. Work will continue during the same hours today. The DOT advises the change will mean more planes and more aircraft noise over Wailuku, Kahului and Spreckelsville.

CIVILIAN MEDAL OF VALOR FOR BROTHERS

Brothers Harris and Peter Phengvath, who rescued a woman from her burning house last October in Kuli'ou'ou, will be presented with the Honolulu Fire Department's Civilian Medal of Valor next week.

Fire Chief Kenneth G. Silva will present the awards during a 9 a.m. ceremony Thursday at HFD's headquarters auditorium in Kaka'ako.

The Phengvath brothers quickly responded to a fire at a neighbor's house in Kuli'ou'ou Valley on Oct. 15. They pulled their elderly neighbor from her burning home and ran to the rear of the house to fight the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrived.

The Civilian Medal of Valor is given to members of the public who distinguish themselves by means of outstanding bravery and at the risk of their own lives. It is the highest honor the HFD can bestow upon a member of the public.

In addition, the department will present Certificates of Commendation to two civilians who helped a swimmer in distress; a city worker who helped an injured woman; an organization whose aid helped protect the environment; and two firefighters who distinguished themselves through exceptional performance of duty.
