Art exhibit's gunman footage mistaken for real thing

Advertiser Staff

Police were summoned to the University of Hawai'i at Manoa last week after a student mistook an art exhibit's prerecorded footage of a gunman for the real thing.

The student called campus security on Thursday evening to report a possible "shooter" at the art building. The ground floor of the art building had been closed for about an hour when Honolulu police were called.

The gunman turned out to be part of an art exhibit entitled "Securrorism," an installation that includes a mock security guard installation and five surveillance monitors showing looped prerecorded footage, according to a news release issued by the UH Department of Art and Art History.

The looped footage lasts five minutes, and includes an actor performing various activities, including one in which he appears to be walking around waving a gun, according to the release.

The exhibit was shut down Friday but was reinstalled yesterday following faculty discussion. The exhibit runs through Friday.
