Del Monte profit lifted by closing of Kunia operations

A gain on the closing of pineapple operations at Kunia helped Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. record net income of $51.6 million during the first three months of this year. A year earlier it had a net profit of $16.5 million.The Coral Gables, Florida-based company said it had a $2.9 million gain from its exiting pineapple operations in Hawai'i. It attributed the bigger overall profit on the improved performance of the company's global operations.
Del Monte abruptly suspended operations in November last year, firing 551 Hawai'i workers. The company had operated here for more than a century.
