Baldwin wins recycle contest

Baldwin High School won first prize and $700 in Hawaiian Telcom's phone book recycling contest.

Students at the Wailuku school collected 12,228 pounds of phone books during the contest, which ran from Feb. 12 to March 31.

Maui High in Kahului was second, with 9,452 pounds and a $500 prize, and Pa'ia Elementary was third with 8,882 pounds and $200. Montessori School of Maui, King Kekaulike High School, Kihei Charter School, Kula Elementary and King Kamehameha III Elementary each won $100.

Students were encouraged to conduct community drives and contests to gather old directories.
