Five San Jose St. teams penalized by NCAA

San Jose State had five teams penalized by the NCAA for dropping below the Academic Progress Rate, the highest number among Western Athletic Conference teams.

The football team lost seven scholarships, the worst football penalty in the country, according to the NCAA. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost 6.3 scholarships.

The Spartans are coached by former University of Hawaii coach, Dick Tomey.

In addition to the football team, San Jose State's baseball, men's soccer, women's basketball and cross country teams were also penalized.

UNLV, a Mountain West Conference team that will play the University of Hawaii in football in 2007, lost three scholarships.
