1 year in jail for stealing 300 pounds of mangoes

A 44-year-old man was sentenced to a year in jail and placed on five years probation for stealing about 300 pounds of mangoes from a Mokule'ia farm last year.

Sinfroso Villegas is the first to be sentenced under a state law that makes it easier for prosecutors to seek felony convictions for the theft of farm products. The theft of farm products can now be a five-year felony rather than a misdemeanor.

Villegas pleaded guilty earlier to the felony theft for stealing the mangoes from Mokule'ia Farms Inc. in August.

Circuit Judge Michael Wilson also ordered Villegas to pay $3,300 in restitution for the mangoes and damage to the trees.

Villegas' co-defendant, Marguerite Emilyon, 41, also faced sentencing under the new law. She admitted being in the truck that Villegas used to haul away the mangoes.

She had earlier pleaded no contest to the theft charge, but Wilson gave her a chance to have the charge dropped if she stays out of trouble.
