Media, celebrities pitch in for Kids Day

Advertiser Staff

New University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Bob Nash was up early today to help sell Kids Day editions for The Advertiser. UH coaches were at the intersection of King Street and University Avenue stopping drivers to buy the special edition.

June Jones and Bob Nash will be hitting the streets today. So will Gov. Linda Linge and Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.

Miss Hawaii, the Cherry Blossom court, Perry & Price, the Society of Seven cast, Iolani coaches, reporters and editors, on-air local TV talent — all will be hawking papers on the streets this morning to support "Kids Day," the annual event in which kids produce a special section for The Advertiser that can only be purchased from volunteers on the streets.

This year's insert is themed "What Can I Do to Help?" and will feature suggestions via essays, poems and drawings from students ranging from first-graders to high school seniors. This is the ninth year of the special edition.

Sales benefit Parents And Children Together (PACT) programs for early childhood education and childcare, child abuse and domestic violence prevention and treatment, teen development, children's mental health, community building and economic development.

So don't be surprised if the UH football or UH basketball coach approach your car this morning at the corner of King and University between 6 and 8 a.m. and ask if you want a paper. Or if Miss Hawaii or the Cherry Blossom court are seen on the corner of Ward and Kapi'olani from 6 a.m. to noon waving a few special editions at cars passing by.

Hundreds of volunteers will be selling the special editions all around O'ahu from 5:45 a.m. to noon. Stop and buy. It's a great read for a great cause.
