UH-Hilo women's tennis advances in regional

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's tennis team advanced into the second round of the NCAA West Regional with a 5-3 win over Cal State Los Angeles today at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.

The Vulcans (14-12), ranked 31st nationally, will face top-ranked and defending national champion BYUH (28-0) tomorrow for a berth to the 16-team national finals.

UH-Hilo took a 2-1 lead against No. 40 Cal State Los Angeles by winning two of the three doubles matches. Susan Souksavath then won at No. 4 singles to put the Vulcans up 3-1.

But the Golden Eagles (13-5) won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to tie the match at 3-3.

UH-Hilo's Nicole Campbell then won at No. 2 singles and Carolina Ardila completed the win with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles.

In another West Regional second-round match tomorrow, the Hawai'i Pacific women (15-4), ranked 18th, will host No. 23 UC San Diego (14-8) at Central O'ahu Regional Park for a finals berth. HPU had a first-round bye and defeated UCSD 8-1 on March 26.

On the men's side, No. 12 BYUH (11-2) will host No. 21 HPU (12-4) for a national berth. Both teams had first-round byes.

The national finals are scheduled for next Wednesday through Saturday at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
