Honolulu No. 2 for priciest homes in U.S., report finds

Advertiser Staff

The only place more expensive to buy a home than in Honolulu is the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area in California, according to a ranking released by Zillow.com today.

The Web site released its quarterly home value reports nationally and in 46 metropolitan areas. Overall, home values are down nearly 1 percent from the first quarter of 2006, as measured by the Zindex home value indicator that measures values of all homes in an area instead of only ones that just sold.

Zindex.com lists Honolulu's home price tag of $626,110, second only to the Bay area's $680,868 price tag.

Rounding out the top five:

  • Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc, Calif. ($596,702)

  • Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County, Calif. ($541,572)

  • San Diego, Calif. ($513,695)

A full report can be found at http://www.zillow.com/quarterlies/QuarterlyReports.htm. Zillow has also released individual reports for each MSA broken out by county, city, ZIP code and neighborhood.

In addition to the Zindex and rate of appreciation, Zillow is for the first time comparing what the "average" American home (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1,500 square feet) is worth in 46 metropolitan areas.
