Remnants of New Zealand storm raise surf

Advertiser Staff

Surfers can thank last week's storm southeast of New Zealand for generating a south swell that is expected to peak above the 8-foot advisory level along south shores today.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory starting at 6 a.m. today and lasting until 6 p.m. tomorrow night for southern shores, with surf 6 to 8 feet expected and occasional higher sets.

That means the usually tame waters off Waikiki may be a little rougher, and inexperienced surfers should use caution before going out too far.

Surf along northern shores will be 8 to 10 feet, west shores will see surf 5 to 7 feet and surf along east shores will be 4 to 6 feet.

The southern swell causing the higher surf will decrease late tomorrow.
