Fire destroys abandoned home on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Fire destroyed an abandoned house on the Big Island last night, causing an estimated $10,000 in damage.

Neighbors said the home, located off Highway at 137 'Opihikao near Kama'ili Road, may have been occupied by squatters, but no injuries were reported.

The Hawai'i County Fire Department said this morning that access to the fire was difficult because it was located about 300 feet off a trail through dense forest. All contents and the structure were lost, HFD said.

Two companies and one tanker responded to the call.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire was called in at 9:12 p.m. and deemed under control by 10 p.m.
