Kamehameha Maui earns state baseball berth

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU — Kamehameha Maui scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Baldwin for a 5-4 win on Tuesday at Maehara Stadium, earning the Warriors their first berth in the state baseball tournament.

Tied at 2-2, the Bears scored two runs in the top of the sixth when Shaun Shima hit a two-run single to give Baldwin a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kamuela Kalehuawehe-Valentine led off with a single but was thrown out by Baldwin catcher Riley Beeson on a steal attempt for the first out. Dayton Alexander followed with a single to center field and Naea Kalehuawehe followed with a double to center that scored Alexander.

Kalehuawehe then scored when Kelton Kealoha's infield grounder was mishandled, tying the game at 4-4. Kyle Feiteira-Watanabe was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and a wild pitch moved runners to second and third.

Aaron Asato then struck out, but Mason Castillon hit a single up the middle to score Kealoha for the winning run.

Kalehuawehe earned the win in relief. Shima took the loss.

Shima went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for Baldwin (11-4). Baldwin, winners of the last six MIL titles, will miss the state tournament for only the second time in 17 years.

Kamehameha Maui (10-5) will join league champion St. Anthony (10-3) as the Maui Interscholastic League's representatives at the state tournament.
