Vino Kapalua on Maui, the original of the wine bar at Restaurant Row, will close its doors June 11. Chef-restaurateur D.K. Kodama and partner, master sommelier Chuck Furuya, said in a press release that the area was slated for future development, and they couldn't find another suitable location. There's also the fact that the major hotel in the area, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, will be closing for a six-month renovation, greatly reducing tourist traffic in the resort.

The Sansei-Vino-Hiroshi group will soon open a new restaurant, Sansei Waikoloa, on the Big Island, and Kodama said another Maui restaurant is not out of the question.

CHEF MAVRO UNVEILS CASSIS HONOLULU

Chef George Mavrothalassitis' casual dining bistro, Cassis Honolulu, opened Monday at 66 Queen St., in the old Palomino Eurobistro location. "Mavro," as he's known to everyone, said the place is inspired by four far-flung locations — Cassis (near Marseilles, where his first restaurant was located), Honolulu, Paris and Alsace — and offers down-to-earth bistro classics with a contemporary Hawai'i Regional Cuisine spin.

The space has been completely redesigned, incorporating colors of the sea and sky and "light art" — projected lighting design. The wine bar offers pupu and wine pairings and the main dining room features creations of the culinary team, which includes Mavro, executive chef Ben Takahashi, executive sous chef Nolan West and Kevin Chong, chef de cuisine at Chef Mavro, Mavrothalassitis' signature restaurant on King Street.
