Four Isle surfers advance at longboard meet

Hawai'i surfers Kai Sallas, Duane DeSoto and Bonga Perkins won first-round heats in the Oxbow Pro World Longboard Championship yesterday.

Eight of the 16 heats in the first round were completed yesterday in 3- to 5-foot waves at Anglet, France.

Sallas was one of the standouts of the first round, receiving a two-wave score of 16.15 (out of 20). He scored a near-perfect 9.25 midway through the heat.

As first-round winners, Sallas, DeSoto and Perkins advanced directly to the third round.

Honolulu's Kekoa Uemura placed third in his first-round heat and will have to compete in the second round.

Three more Hawai'i surfers have yet to complete their first-round heats: Ned Snow, Noah Shimabukuro and Keegan Edwards.

Four other Hawai'i surfers were eliminated in the trials rounds: Dino Miranda, Kapono Nahina, Scotty Fong Jr., and Keoki Saguibo.

The winner of the Oxbow Pro will be crowned the 2007 world champion of longboard surfing. All surfers must ride a board at least 9 feet long.

HAWAI'I MEN IN FOURTH

Hawai'i fell one spot, into fourth place, after yesterday's second round of the men's Western Athletic Conference Golf Championship, at Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, Nev.

Host Nevada (276-554) leads runnerup Boise State by 10 shots. The Rainbows (284-567) are 13 back, at 9-under par.

Individually, senior Pierre-Henri Soero (72-140) remains the top UH golfer at 4-under par, tied for sixth. Ryan Perez (70-141) shares 10th and Travis Toyama (69-142) 12th. Cody Wolfenbarger (73-149) and Kyle Walters (71-78-149) are tied for 34th.

Fresno State's Grant Doverspike leads the individual standings at 67-133. The championship concludes today.


TENNIS

LAM WINS IN RETURN

After a long layoff due to an injured left wrist, Honolulu's Chris Lam returned to the pro circuit yesterday and won his first match. Lam and Ryler De Heart beat Adam Fass and Monte Tucker, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round of the $10,000 Grand Harbor Saab Classic, in Vero Beach, Fla.

Lam and De Heart are seeded third in doubles and advance to quarterfinals. Lam begins singles action today on the clay against Australian Adam Kennedy. For the first time in his career, Lam earned a seed (No. 8) in the singles main draw.

Lam is ranked 645th in the world, and 54th among Americans. He is No. 676 in doubles, 67th among the U.S. players.
