Kamehameha Schools senior Ana Viena-Lota scored a career-high 27 points last night to lead the Warriors to a 49-44 victory over visiting Punahou in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's regular season finale.

Kamehameha and 'Iolani, each 10-2, finished tied for first place in the standings and will play at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at McCabe Gym for the championship and automatic state tournament berth.

Four-time defending ILH champ Punahou, 7-5, will play in the league's "second-place tournament" and attempt to gain the ILH's second state berth via that route.

Viena-Lota, a 5-foot-10 forward, scored from all angles last night before a home crowd of about 450 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym, including about 60 members of her extended family.

"I expected some of my family and friends to come, but I didn't know that much would be here," said Viena-Lota, whose previous high-point performance this season was 17 points. "God just blessed me tonight."

Punahou, which had beaten the Warriors in their previous meeting, took a 22-20 halftime lead on Tressa Torres' layup with two seconds remaining.

Kamehameha went up 31-27 going into the fourth period, but Buffanblu guard Janelle Nomura closed it to 31-29 with two free throws a minute into the final quarter.

The Warriors then went on a 6-0 run to lead 37-29, before Punahou closed it to 39-37 on two free throws by Chelsea Deptula. But Kamehameha answered with a 6-0 run of its own to lead, 45-37, with 1:33 left.

The Buffanblu got as close as 45-42 after Torres' layup with 37 seconds remaining, but the Warriors held on for the victory.

Viena-Lota was diplomatic in her scoring, notching seven points in the first period, six in the second, eight in the third and six in the fourth.

"She killed us," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "She's a nightmare to guard, and she was really determined tonight. She's special, the best player in our league."

Reserve forward Kylle Roy added 10 points off the bench — all in the second half. Dara Tompkison led Punahou with 10 points.
