Overnight standoff in Kula ends in shooting arrest

WAILUKU, Maui — An overnight standoff ended early this morning in the arrest of a 53-year-old man who is accused of shooting another man in the leg and arm, police said.

Police said the victim was shot outside the suspect's Kula home around 10:40 p.m. yesterday about 1.5 miles above Harold Rice Park. The injured man, 43, was shot once in the leg and once in the arm and was initially treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was later transferred to Wilcox Hospital on Kaua'i, police said.

The suspect engaged police in a standoff until surrendering at 6:15 a.m., police said. A 9mm handgun was seized. Approximately 30 officers were involved in the incident, including the Maui Police Department's Special Response Team.

Police did not release information on a motive for the shooting.

Several homes were evacuated during the standoff and Kula Highway was closed from 11:15 p.m. yesterday and reopened at 7:45 a.m. today.

Police said the suspect has convictions for firearm offenses, reckless endangering and petty misdemeanor marijuana possession.
