1 injury, 1 arrest in Maui shooting incident

A 43-yeard-old man was wounded and a 53-year-old man was arrested following reports of a shooting at about 10:40 p.m. last night on Maui.

Police said they received several reports of multiple gunshots being heard at a site off Kula Highway, about 1.5 miles above Rice Park. Callers indicated injuries may have resulted from the shooting, police said.

The Maui Police Department Special Response Team was sent to the scene. A suspect was taken into custody at about 6:15 this morning, after an overnight standoff, police said.

Several surrounding homes were evacuated during the standoff. Also, as a precaution, Kula Highway was closed at about 11:15 last night and reopened at about 7:45 this morning.

The injured man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
