BYUH women, HPU men advance to tennis nationals

The top-ranked and defending national champion Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated Hawai'i Hilo 5-0 this afternoon in La'ie in the second round of the NCAA Division II West Regional to earn a berth to the national championships.

The Seasiders (29-0) swept through the three doubles matches, and closed out No. 31 UH Hilo (14-13) with Yuliya Ustyuzhanina winning at No. 1 singles and Jing Jing Liu winning at No. 2 singles.

Earlier at BYU-Hawai'i, the No. 21 Hawai'i Pacific men's tennis team upset 12th-ranked BYUH 5-3 to earn a berth to the national championships.

BYU-Hawai'i (12-4) led 2-1 after the doubles matches. But the Sea Warriors (13-4) rallied by winning matches at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.

BYU-Hawai'i won at No. 5 singles and the fourth singles match was still in progress when HPU claimed the victory.

The 16-team national tournament begins Wednesday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
