Trial to begin in case of 1991 fatal shooting on Maui

The Maui News

WAILUKU — With jury selection completed Wednesday afternoon, testimony is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of a man charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a friend during a camping trip nearly 16 years ago.

Robert Henneman Jr., 57, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He is charged in the Aug. 18, 1991, killing of David Gibbins, a Makawao man who was 40 at the time. Henneman and Gibbins had been among friends on a camping trip at Nuu Landing in Kaupo when an argument between the men escalated, according to witness accounts. Witnesses said Henneman went to his van, got a Colt AR-15 assault rifle and shot Gibbins in the chest.

Both men had been drinking that night, according to witnesses.

Henneman was serving a term of life in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder. He was allowed to withdraw his plea in 2004, after a court ruling that his attorney at the time had given him wrong advice about the sentence he faced.

Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza is presiding over the trial.
