Obama now under Secret Service protection

U.S. Senator Barack Obama, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, was put under protection of the Secret Service, said Russ Knocke, a Homeland Security Department spokesman.

The decision followed a request from Obama and there's no known threat against him, said a department official who requested anonymity.

The Secret Service determined that the Illinois lawmaker has met several criteria for protection, such as actively campaigning for his party's nomination and raising more than $100,000, the official said.

E-mails and telephone calls to spokespersons on the senator's campaign were not immediately returned.
