No injuries from 150-gallon acid spill on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Approximately 150 gallons of sulfuric acid solution spilled from a punctured plastic container at the Kona Trans Base Yard off of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway on the Big Island at 8:21 p.m. last night.

Hawai'i County firefighters responded minutes later and secured the area by applying 1,700 pounds of soda ash to the acid.

A cleanup crew hired by the contractor was scheduled to arrive overnight.

No injuries were reported from the spill. The fire department said the puncture was accidental.
