Rainbows beat Vulcans 10-1

Ian Harrington pitched eight strong innings to lead Hawai'i-Manoa over UH-Hilo, 10-1, tonight in non-conference baseball at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Harrington (7-6) gave up a run, one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts for the Rainbows (29-19). Harrington had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before Ryan Tairiol broke it up with a single.

Nick Rhodes pitched a scoreless ninth, but only after loading the bases with a walk and two singles.

Joe Davis (2-7) allowed five runs (four earned), 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout in six innings for the Vulcans (12-33-1).

Manoa took a 1-0 lead in the top of second on Vinnie Catricala's two-out solo home run to left.

The Rainbows added three in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Kris Sanchez with the bases loaded and on RBI singles by Catricala and Landon Hernandez to make it 4-0 against Davis.

They added a run in the fifth. Jon Hee led off with a double and took third on Derek DuPree's single to center. Hee scored on a pick-off throwing error to first by Davis; DuPree had to hold first, but took second on a passed ball before Justin Frash walked. Brandon Haislet grounded into a double play and Sanchez grounded out to second to end the inning with UH ahead, 5-0.

The Rainbows added four in the seventh off Dustin Gilmore on RBI singles by DuPree and Haislet and an error that brought home two more to make it 9-0.

The Vulcans got on the board in the sixth, getting their first hit in the process. With one out, Harrington walked A.J. Satele and Robby Mowers. Ryan Tairiol singled to right to break up the no-hitter to load the bases. Dayne Ogawa's sacrifice fly to center made it 9-1.

Frash homered to right-center off John Holley to increase the Rainbows' lead to 10-1.
