Leilehua shocks Kalani to earn state water polo berth

Advertiser Staff

Robyn Araki scored three goals and Jennifer Morihara and Elizabeth Lukefar added two each as the Leilehua High School girls water polo team upset Kalani 8-7 in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association tournament to earn their first berth to the state tournament yesterday at the Brigham Young University-Hawai'i pool.

Leilehua (8-5), the fifth seed, jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led by as much as four goals in the third quarter. But the fourth-seeded Falcons (9-4) rallied behind Kaila Garcia, only to fall short.

Garcia led Kalani with four goals.

The Falcons defeated the Mules 7-4 during the regular season. Kalani had been to all three state tournaments.

Also at BYUH, No. 1 Kahuku (13-0) defeated No. 8 McKinley 14-3 behind five goals from Gina Ahue and four from Noe Wicker.

At Kaimuki High School, third-seeded Kapolei (11-2) defeated sixth-seeded Mililani 7-1 and second-seeded Roosevelt (12-1) defeated seventh-seeded Kaimuki. No score was reported from that game. All of the quarterfinal winners received berths to next week's state tournament at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Mililani and Kaimuki both finished their seasons 7-6, while McKinley ends the year at 4-9 after not having enough players to field a team last year.

In Friday's semifinals at Kaimuki, Kapolei will face Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m. and Kahuku will play Leilehua at 4:45 p.m.

The third-place and championship games are on Saturday at Central O'ahu Regional Park. Kahuku has won all four OIA titles.
