Senas, Higa selected UH-Hilo Athletes of the Year

Softball's Charity Senas and baseball's Michael Higa were selected as University of Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcan Athletes of the Year.

Senas, a junior shortstop, set season records in home runs (12), RBIs (55) and slugging percentage (.714). The Vulcans finished the regular season at 40-11 and await the announcement of the NCAA Regionals on Monday.

Higa, a junior second baseman, leads the Vulcans with a .320 batting average and 37 RBIs. The Vulcans have three games remaining.

Tennis senior Daniel Pollock, a health and physical education major (4.0), and cross country junior Kari Andrew, a biology major (3.77) were the Academic Athletes of the Year.

The softball team was honored as Team of the Year.

The following athletes were recognized by their teammates as most dedicated: Clayton Uyechi (baseball), Ryosuke Nozawa (men's basketball), Amy Kaaiakamanu and Chrystal Hodson (women's basketball), Germain Ortiz (men's cross country), Kari Andrew (women's cross country), Logan Goulding (men's golf), Nicole Aoki (women's golf), George Ichimaru (men's soccer), Karen Weatherby (women's soccer), Meghan Jost (softball), Daniel Pollock (men's tennis), Akimi Kifune, Christie Pagatpatan, and Justine Abella (women's tennis) and Kahealani Silva (women's volleyball).

Athletic Director Awards were given to Silva (courage), Leo Sing Chow (leadership/commitment), Ryan Taiariol (leadership/commitment), Zoie Sevilla (fortitude/achievement), Pollock (fortitude/achievement), Justin Dobson (loyalty) and Haunani Haasenritter (loyalty).
