TV, radio go live with Don Ho service, memorial

Advertiser Staff

When Hawai'i bids a fond aloha to entertainer Don Ho tomorrow, KGMB-9 will telecast live from 4:30 to 10 p.m., showing the private family service and the final musical tribute in Waikiki.

"We wanted everyone in the state to be part of this huge event," said Chris Archer, KGMB news director, who will have nine cameras roving from one spot to another, with a signal originating from the ocean and beamed back to shore.

A long lineup of entertainers will sing a final aloha to Ho, who died April 14 of heart failure.

CBS and CNN are likely to carry KGMB's footage, live or delayed, said Archer. And the station later will edit an hour-long documentary on Ho, with broadcast date to be announced.

Starting at 4:30 p.m., KHNL News 8 will begin its coverage with weekend anchor Diane Ako hosting "Remembering a Legend." For its 6 p.m. newscast, KHNL will return to live coverage of the service.

The station will also be live streaming the coverage over the internet on KHNL.com.

KITV plans live updates for its 5 p.m. broadcast; KHON will do the same for its 6 p.m. newscast.

Radio stations KRATER 96 FM, KINE-FM "Hawaiian 105" and KCCN-FM 100 also plan live updates from the events.

AM-940 will broadcast the Sunset on the Beach show live.

Anyone with a marine radio can also listen in on the scattering of Ho's ashes on Marine Band Channel 8.
