Advertiser Staff

Matt Daly fired a one-hitter to lead Hawai'i over UH-Hilo, 8-0, today in non-conference college baseball at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Daly (5-1) walked lead-off batter David Chu to start the bottom of the first inning before retiring the next 25 in a row before giving up a pinch-hit single to Ronel Trias with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Daly had nine strikeouts in making his fifth start for the Rainbows (30-19).

Clayton Uyechi (2-3) was tagged for five runs, five hits and two walks while striking out two in 4 1/3 innings for the Vulcans (12-34-1).

Manoa took a 1-0 lead in the third. Landon Hernandez led off with a single, but was forced out at second on Eli Christensen's grounder to third. Christensen took second when Jon Hee grounded out to third, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Derek DuPree's double to right. DuPree was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple to end the inning.

The Rainbows sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run fifth. Vinnie Catricala led off with a double, took third on Evan Zimny's single and scored on Hernandez's sacrifice fly to center. Christensen then hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to increase UH's lead to 4-0. After walking Hee, Uyechi was pulled for Jeffrey Germain to face DuPree, who flied out to right. A wild pitch sent Hee to second before Frash walked. Haislet doubled to left to score Hee and send Frash to third to make it 5-0. Kris Sanchez walked to load the bases, but Catricala grounded to third for a force at second to end the inning.

Manoa increased its lead in the sixth. After loading the bases with a walk and two singles, Hee grounded to short for a double play to score Zimny from third, making it 6-0.

The Vulcans started the top of the seventh with their second relief pitcher of the game in Karl Maas. Frash walked and was thrown out trying to steal second before Haislet doubled to left-center and took third on Sanchez's deep fly out to center. Catricala followed with an RBI single to left to make it 7-0.

The Rainbows padded their lead in the ninth with an RBI double by Sanchez to make it 8-0.
