Advertiser Staff

In "Kai: Ocean Wisdom from Hawai'i" (Watermark Publishing, $16.95), Australian writer Renata Provenzano has gathered water-related words from aquaholics throughout the state. "You can never control our ocean or the waves. To flow with the ocean is always the best thing to do," says waterman Clyde Aikau in the book. People including paddler Kimokeo Kapahulehua and anthropologist Yosihiko Sinoto share their ocean mana'o. The book will be launched at 6 p.m. May 11 at the Maui Ocean Center, (808) 534-7170. On May 12, Provenzano will sign books at noon at Borders Maui and at Borders Express in Kaahumanu Mall at 2 p.m. She will be on O'ahu for the Book and Music Festival — look for her at the Watermark Publishing booth on May 20.

GUERILLA ART

OH WOW, LAULAU

You'll find art and taro activist Daniel Anthony's Homeless Maoli Artist Gallery on the corner of Nu'uanu and Pauahi streets from 4 to 9 tonight. Showing art that didn't find a home in a gallery for Maoli Arts Month, which starts today at First Friday and Bishop Museum, Anthony will also give out 400 sweet-potato laulau, Waiahole lemonade and awa. "We're taking it upon ourselves to feed and entertain guests," he says. "Artists feed our community visually for the most part at their own expense. MAMo is a great way for people to give back to artists for all their input over the years."
