    EX-PRISON GUARD MUST SERVE TERM

A former federal prison guard was sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison yesterday for smuggling drugs into the Federal Detention Center in 2005.

Akoni Sandoval Kapihe, who resigned after his arrest, pleaded guilty last year to the federal charge of getting $50 for providing an inmate with protein supplement containers that included methamphetamine and marijuana. Kapihe admitted he suspected the container had drugs but continued to smuggle containers into the prison three other times, getting a total of $200.

U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor said Kapihe put other guards and inmates at risk by his actions.

She ordered him to start serving the prison term on June 14.
