Hawai'i-Manoa banged out 15 hits to back the strong pitching of Ian Harrington in a 10-1 romp of UH-Hilo last night in nonconference collegiate baseball at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Harrington (7-6), who held the Vulcans (10-33-1) hitless through 6 1/3 innings, allowed a run, a hit and two walks, while striking out seven, in eight innings for the Rainbows (29-19).

Rainbows coach Mike Trapasso was pleased with the senior left-hander's outing.

"I don't care who he was pitching against today, he was in command of his pitches, of his body," Trapasso said. "It was as sharp as it sounded. Without question, it was his best outing."

Nick Rhodes pitched a scoreless ninth, but only after loading the bases with two outs with a walk and two singles.

Ryan Tairiol broke up the no-hitter with a single to load the bases with one out after Harrington had issued back-to-back walks to A.J. Satele and Robby Mowers. Dayne Ogawa's sacrifice fly to center accounted for UHH's only run.

Harrington said he was aware of the no-hitter, but wasn't dwelling on it.

"I had a little of a mental lapse, anytime you walk two batters in a row," he said. "Obviously, it was a lack of focus and I paid for it."

Harrington said he had thrown no-hitters in summer leagues during high school and when he was in junior college in Bellevue, Wash.

Before he gave up the hit, the only base runner he allowed was when Shane Kessel swung and missed on a third strike that got away, allowing the batter to reach first on a wild pitch.

The back-to-back walks he allowed in the seventh came after Michael Higa flied out to deep center.

Otherwise, Harrington was in total command.

"I kept my mechanics under control," he said. "I was able to work ahead of hitters."

Except for the wild pitch strikeout and inning the Vulcans scored, the only other runner to reach against Harrington was David Chu. He reached on catcher's interference by Kevin Fujii, who replaced starter Hernandez in the eighth.

Joe Davis (2-7) was tagged for five runs (four earned), 10 hits and two walks in six innings for UHH, which has lost six in a row since a tie against Hawai'i Pacific on April 21. Dustin Gilmore allowed four (three earned) in two innings and John Holley gave up one in one inning.

Jon Hee led UH's 15-hit attack by batting 3 for 5 with two doubles. Vinnie Catricala and Justin Frash each hit solo home runs — the second homers of the season for both.

The Rainbows took a 1-0 lead in the second on Catricala's homer to left.

They increased their lead with a three-run fourth on an RBI ground out to first by Kris Sanchez with the bases loaded and RBI singles by Catricala and Landon Hernandez.

Manoa added run in the fifth when Hee doubled, took third on a Derek DuPree's single and scored on a pick-off throwing error to first by Davis.

Manoa added four in the seventh against Gilmore on RBI singles by DuPree and Brandon Haislet. Later with the bases loaded, two more scored on shortstop Shane Kessel's fielding error, making it 9-0.

After the Vulcans scored in the eighth, Frash homered in the ninth off Holley to make it 10-1.

Although the Rainbows took the game handily, Trapasso said today's game is a test for his team. Last week, the Rainbows drubbed New Mexico State, 21-6, in the series opener, only to get swept in a doubleheader the next day.

"We're going to find out a little more about our club tomorrow," Trapasso said. "If we come out with the same toughness today, then we're on the right track. Then you can say the reality is we've been playing pretty good for three, four weeks and we just had one bad day in Las Cruces. I'm hoping that's all that was.

"If we come out and play like we did today, it don't matter who we play. We're going to win because we played a very complete game."

The Rainbows will start Matt Daly (4-1, 2.75) today, while the Vulcans counter with Clayton Uyechi (2-2, 4.18) in a confrontation of sophomore right-handers.

Game time is 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on 1420 AM.

The series concludes at noon tomorrow. The Vulcans season ends after this series, while the Rainbows resume Western Athletic Conference play the next two weekends.
