Brushfire burns about 5 acres near Kaua'i jail

Advertiser Staff

WAILUA – About five acres were seared as a result of a fire that broke out at around 1 p.m. Friday afternoon on top of a hill behind Kaua'i Community Correctional Center. The area is known as the Kalepa Forest Reserve.

Firefighters and rescue specialists from the Lihu'e, Kalaheo and Kapa'a stations, Air-1, Public Works water tanker operators and employees of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife responded to the fire.

It was deemed under control at about 6 pm.

No lives, structures or native plant and animal species were threatened.

According to Kaua'i Fire Department officials, the first responders were dealing with a very difficult situation initially because the fire was burning on the side of a steep hill and the dirt road for the trucks to pass was so narrow that they had to drive through the brush to get close to the area where the fire was.
