Kula man charged in Wednesday night shooting

Kula resident Mark Alan Martins has been charged with multiple felony offenses stemming from a shooting at his home Wednesday night

An overnight standoff ended early Thursday morning in the arrest of Martins, 53, who is accused of shooting another man in the leg and arm, police said.

Police said Martins was charged with attempted murder, reckless endangering, felon in possession of a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, criminal property damage, eight counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, felon in possession of ammunition and ownership of prohibited high capacity magazine.

Bail for Martins was set at $250,000

Police said the victim was shot outside the Matins' Kula home around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday about 1.5 miles above Harold Rice Park. The injured man, 43, was initially treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was later transferred to Wilcox Hospital on Kaua'i, police said.

Martins held police at bay prior to surrendering at 6:15 a.m. A 9mm handgun was seized. Approximately 30 officers were involved in the incident, including the Maui Police Department's Special Response Team.

Police did not release information on a motive for the shooting.

Several homes were evacuated during the standoff and Kula Highway was closed from 11:15 p.m. Wednesday until 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
