Two killed in high-speed Pearl City crash

Advertiser Staff

A 47-year-old Wai'anae woman and Kapolei man, 41, were killed today when the speeding car they were in veered off Kamehameha Highway and crashed into a parking lot at the Pearl City Business Plaza.

No other injuries were reported in the 3:02 a.m. crash.

The medical examiner's office is not releasing the names of the victims until their identities are confirmed.

Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said the woman lost control of her speeding westbound 2006 Mitsubishi Galant which veered left on Kamehameha Highway, and spun out of control about 270 feet east of Pu'umomi Street.

The car crossed a grassy median, hit a street sign and crossed the eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway before jumping the sidewalk, striking a utility pole and vaulting over a upper-parking lot wall and dropping to the lower level.

The car slammed into a natural gas line and cement pillar on its downward flight.

Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The broken gas line did not cause a major problem.

The deaths are O'ahu's 31st and 32nd traffic fatalities of the year as compared to 36 on the same date in 2006.
