Contest's goal: Say yes to surfing, no to drugs

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

The city is sponsoring a surf contest this weekend to promote surfing as a healthy alternative to drug use.

Freedom Surf Contest: Surfing for a Drug-Free Hawai'i, hosted by the nonprofit Surfing the Nations, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki.

This contest, open to all ages and skill levels, supports Mayor Mufi Hannemann's campaign to establish a drug-free city and county work force.

Cost is $40, which includes a T-shirt ($20 without a T-shirt). Beach entries should report to the check-in tent by 6:30 a.m.
