DLNR to discuss adding state forest reserves
Advertiser Staff
A public hearing to discuss two proposed additions of government lands to state forest reserves is being held at 6 tonight at the Kalanimoku Building Room 132, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife is hosting the meeting and is inviting public comment on the possible additions. The DLNR would manage the lands for their natural resource value and other potential uses.
The areas up for discussion are approximately 3,716 acres at Moanalua valley and approximately 0.298 acres near Dillingham airfield to the Mokule'ia forest reserve, in Mokule'ia district, for endangered species recovery and other appropriate forestry purposes, pending final execution of land transfer from the Department of Defense to DLNR.
The Moanalua land would be added to the state's Honolulu watershed forest reserve for purposes of watershed protection and research, native species habitat restoration, endangered species recovery, forest recreation, education and management, and other appropriate forestry purposes. It would expand the existing Honolulu watershed forest reserve from 7,270 acres to 10,983 acres.
Persons unable to attend or wishing to present additional comments may mail written testimony postmarked no later than May 22, 2007 to the Forestry Program Manager, DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 1151 Punchbowl Street Room 325, Honolulu, HI 96813.
