Waipahu students perform eco-opera Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

Waikele Elementary School third-graders in Waipahu will present "Save the Habitats!" an original opera the students wrote themselves. The production features about 100 students, including nine soloists.

The one-night-only production will take place at 6 and 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the school's Hale Hanai cafeteria at 94-1035 Kukula St., Waipahu.

The project is part of Hawaii Opera Theatre's award-winning education program, which brings a residency to select

schools each year. The program works with students, teachers and administrators to produce a mini-opera. It also enables the school to incorporate artistic program components into school curriculum.

The songs of "Save The Habitats!" — based on lessons the students learned about the dire predicaments of the Earth's environment — is set to famous opera and operetta tunes.

Admission is $1 and open to the public. Space is limited and RSVPs are requested via phone: 677-6100 ext. 240, or e-mail
