NCL opens lu'au & show at Kaua'i's Kilohana Plantation

NCL America opened the cruise line's new lu'au and dinner show on Kaua'i last month after "millions of dollars" of renovations at Kilohana Plantation.

The company added a pavilion with the capacity to seat 1,000. The dinner and show will be offered to cruise ship passengers on Monday, Thursday and Saturday evenings when the ships spend the night on Kaua'i. Other groups, residents and visitors will be able to book the shows on alternate nights later on, said spokeswoman Denise Hayashi.

The company declined to be more specific about how much the renovations cost.

The Lu'au Kalamaku will offer traditional Hawaiian games, arts and crafts lessons, a hula show and a theatrical production. The food will include lomi lomi salmon, poi, taro bread and kalua pig catered by Gaylord's Restaurant.

Visitors can also book a train ride on Kaua'i Plantation Railway or a Clydesdale carriage ride through the 35-acre estate.

NCL America's managing director of Hawai'i operations Robert Kritzman said the investment is part of the company's effort to emphasize Hawaiian culture and values to visitors. "Hawai'i is a very special place and passengers cruising NCL America ships are here to experience Hawaiian culture and learn about Hawai'i's heritage," he said.

Kritzman said the company hired more than 100 people for the new venture: 45 performers, 15 crafters, 60 servers, bar and culinary staff.

The cruise line had previously offered passengers a lu'au on Maui but stopped providing that as an optional shore excursion when the new Kaua'i luau began last month.
