DUI arrests up 15 percent on Big Island

Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving last week, including four who were involved in accidents and two who were under the age of 21. The arrests bring the 2007 total to 445 compared to 388 at the same time last year, an increase of 15 percent.DUI roadblocks and patrols are used on the Big Island, and though DUI arrests are up, the number of major accidents has decreased from 902 in 2006 at this time to 763, a 14 percent dip.
There have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island in 2007, compared to 14 at the same time last year.
