A 21-year-old Nanakuli man was indicted by an O'ahu grand jury this morning on a manslaughter charge accusing him of punching a North Carolina man at a Leeward Coast beach on April 22. The visitor died two days later.

Less Schnabel Jr. "false cracked" Christopher Reuther with an unprovoked punch and then took a bag from the victim's car, city Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp told Circuit Judge Derrick Chan, who confirmed Schnabel's bail of $100,000.

Reuther, who had been offered enrollment at the University of Hawai'i law school, came here earlier in the day, went to a lu'au on the Leeward Coast, looked for a place to camp and ended up at Zablan beach park when he was struck, according to police.

He died from head injuries, according to the autopsy report.

The indictment charges Schnabel with recklessly killing Reuther. The charge carries a prison term of up to 20 years.

Schnabel will be arraigned later and given a trial date.
