Kuhio Beach sunset show to relocate temporarily

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

Starting this week, the daily Kuhio Beach Torch Lighting and Hula Show will temporary relocate to the Kapi'olani Park Bandstand for a few months while the city renovates the mound where the sunset show is presented.

Show time remains from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The torch-lighting will continue nightly along Kalakaua Avenue.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause the performers and visitors," said Mayor Mufi Hannemann, in a news release. "But the work is necessary and will result in a better setting for this highly popular show."

The city will improve pedestrian access to the mound with the construction of two concrete paths, one along the base of the stage and one to the rear of the viewing area.

A wear-resistant surface on the stage and artificial turf also will be installed.

The project will cost $120,000 and should be completed by Aug. 31.

The sunset torch-lighting and hula show is presented nightly by the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, Waikiki Improvement Association and the City and County of Honolulu.
