Mail carrier sentenced to 6 months for theft

Advertiser Staff

A Big Island mail carrier today was sentenced to six months in prison by federal Judge Michael Seabright for stealing mail.

Joseph Amormino Jr., 39, said he did it because he was upset with being passed over for a promotion.

A U.S. Postal Service investigation into numerous complaints of undelivered mail from customers led to the arrest of Amormino, whose delivery route was in rural Pahoa.

Investigators mailed a greeting card with a $20 bill in it and followed Amormino on his route. Investigators later recovered the undelivered but opened greeting card and another piece of undelivered and opened mail in Amormino's car.
