Hand grenade discovered at UH amphitheater

Advertiser Staff

A rusted hand grenade was unearthed this morning by a University of Hawai'i groundskeeper preparing the Andrews Amphitheater for a graduate ceremony.

Workers were in the process of digging a six-inch hole when they discovered the grenade, which was buried underground.

Police and campus security were called at 11 a.m. and the police bomb squad removed the ordinance at about 11:20 a.m.

An emergency notification was sent to all student faculty and staff at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

The e-mail read, "This morning a University groundskeeper discovered a hand grenade buried in a section of Andrews Amphitheater. Police and campus security were called and verified the existence of the grenade. The area has been cordoned off and the bomb squad has been called. Please stay out of the Andrews Amphitheater area until further notice."
