Matson contracts with BAE Systems for barge upgrades

Advertiser Staff

BAE Systems has been awarded a contract from Matson Navigation Company, Inc., for the drydock, survey, maintenance and repair of the cargo barge Mauna Loa.

The estimated total value of the 42-day work package, which will begin in July, could be more than $2 million. The company already is at work on the sister barge, Haleakala.

Items in the contract include topside and underwater body preservation, hull and mechanical repairs and preparation for inspections. The specific start date for work on the Mauna Loa will await completion and delivery of the Haleakala this month. All work will be performed at BAE Systems' Ship Repair facility in San Francisco.

"We're happy to be chosen, once again, to service Matson's vessels," said Al Krekich, president, BAE Systems Ship Repair.

The Mauna Loa, like the Haleakala, is a cargo container barge that serves the inter-island Hawai'i trade routes for Matson Navigation Company.

BAE Systems Ship Repair is the United States' leading non-nuclear ship repair, modernization and conversion company – focused on dry dock and ship repair services for the U.S. Navy, other defense agencies and commercial customers. It has major operations in Norfolk, San Diego, San Francisco and Hawaii.
