Man held at police jail dies

A 51-year-old man died Sunday after being found unconscious in his cellblock at the main police station.

The man, who was 5-feet-11 and 250 pounds, was discovered unresponsive at 5 p.m. and died at a hospital.

The medical examiner's office yesterday withheld the man's name pending notification of relatives.

There was no evidence of foul play, authorities said.

The man, who had no permanent local address, was arrested Friday on two misdemeanor warrants with bail totaling $1,900. The arrest was made at 724 Kailua Road at 5:40 p.m.



NOT GUILTY PLEA IN WATANABE CASE

A 22-year-old Kalihi man pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of murdering a Japanese visitor who has been missing since April 12.

Kirk Lankford, who was being held on $1 million bail at O'ahu Community Correction Center, entered the plea through a video hookup to the courtroom.

Circuit Judge Derrick Chan scheduled Lankford's trial for the week of July 9.

Lankford is accused of murdering Masumi Watanabe, a 21-year Japanese national staying with a host family. She was last seen on her daily walk along Pupukea Road.



MOTORCYCLISTS WARNED OF THEFTS

Police are warning motorcycle owners to guard their vehicles in light of a recent islandwide rash of thefts.

Police did not say how many motorcycles have been stolen, nor when the thefts took place. There have been reports of motorcycles stolen from shopping centers and residential areas, police said.

Motorcycle owners are advised to secure their cycles to fixed objects, police said.



DROWNING VICTIM WAS FROM KOLOA

Kaua'i police yesterday identified a man who died Sunday while surfing at Prince Kuhio Beach as Kenneth Doudt, 53, of Koloa.

County officials are calling the death a drowning, the island's fifth this year.



WOMAN FOUND IN STREAM IDENTIFIED

The city medical examiner's office has identified a woman whose body was found floating in Nu'uanu Stream as Yoon Kim, 70, of Honolulu.

The cause of death remained under investigation.

Emergency workers recovered Kim's body Friday night in the area of River and Hotel streets.
