Oregon man dies helping others in rip tide off Maui

WAILEA, Maui — A 29-year-old Oregon man drowned yesterday while trying to save four swimmers who had become trapped in a rip tide at Polo Beach.

Police said the swimmers made it to safety with the help of two unidentified Maui men, but would-be rescuer Kuan Phou drowned. The incident happened around 2 p.m.

Signs warning of the rip tide were posted at the Wailea beach, police said.
